Professional Development & School Support

Goals & Analysis:

ERS assisted NYCSD Superintendent Joel Klein, Chief Operating Officer LaVerne Evans Srinivasan and HR Director Betsy Aron to rethink the role of human resources in supporting a comprehensive system of professional development.  ERS’s work included:

  • mapping the current human resources spending and activities
  • comparing NYC’s HR spending to research based principles of effective professional development
  • conducting strategic reviews of the largest areas of HR involvement in professional development, including new teacher induction and mentoring
  • quantifying the cost of new teacher induction in NYC and how it compares for teachers through different routes into teaching
  • quantifying the cost of awarding teachers salary increments for gaining course credits.
  • analyzing human resources role in the performance management of teachers and principals

Outcomes:

With this information ERS was able to help NYCSD identify ways to make induction, mentoring, and coursework more strategic. The work resulted in a blueprint of HR’s role in NYCSD professional development that spans hiring, induction, support, and incentives for career growth.
